Why hire a Virtual Assistant?
Why hire a Virtual Assistant?
Why hire a Virtual Assistant? Before the pandemic, it was a question any sole business owner, who’s used to working alone, might ask. After all, things were ticking along nicely – and wasn’t it just business owners who were struggling, that needed the help of a Virtual Assistant?
The same question can be asked today – Day 14 of Lockdown in the United Kingdom. Perhaps it’s even more relevant today, when if you're not a key worker, you’re instructed to stay at home. VAs are already set up to work remotely, we have everything a business might need already in place – up-to-date software, broadband etc – we’ve registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and we have insurances in place.
There are many businesses, entrepreneurs, charities and private individuals that use the services of a Virtual Assistant. It may surprise you to hear that the dynamics of each of those businesses vary enormously. For some, they hire a Virtual Assistant because they can’t fit anymore into their working day. They are struggling to get everything done and things are slipping through the cracks. Their business is starting to suffer.
But for others, hiring a Virtual Assistant is a strategic move. Their business is doing well, they’re keeping on top of things and everything is heading in the right direction.
And for private individuals, with busy social and work lives, how great is it to hand over to a VA the task of finding the perfect gift, book travel, find a clown (yes, I did this in a previous life, with three days’ notice!), or find a new cleaner.
So why hire a Virtual Assistant?
Here’s a breakdown of why hiring a Virtual Assistant is something all business owners should do.
Reduce your costs
If your business is growing, it’s time to start building a team around you – and a Virtual Assistant is a great start. Why? Because it costs less, and they can do more.
As a Virtual Assistant is a remote, freelance worker, there’s no employee salary to find. You don’t have to cough up for holiday, sick pay, or even training courses and you only have to pay for the hours you need.
Additionally, a Virtual Assistant can often carry out tasks traditionally managed by other roles in the business. For example, a Virtual Assistant can look after your customer service, administrative tasks, social media management, online content creation and even basic website maintenance.
Protect your time
You only have so many hours in your day. No matter how great you are, you are not going to change that, so it makes sense to manage your time well. There are some jobs that are crucial for the business to run smoothly but aren’t worth you spending valuable time doing yourself.
Sit down and work out what your hourly rate is. Now look at some of the tasks you’ve been performing - tasks such as administration, organising meetings, managing your inbox, recruitment shortlisting, dealing with customer queries, competitor analysis etc. Are they worth your hourly rate or is it more cost-effective to hire someone to manage those tasks for you?
While you're plodding through your administrivia, you’re not earning.
Let’s say you earn £100 per hour. Let’s say I earn £30 an hour. While you’re paying yourself £100 to manage your inbox, you’re not being paid by anyone else. You’ve lost £100. But, if you pay me that £30 to manage your inbox (and a whole lot of other stuff, too), while you go and do your stuff at £100 per hour, you’re ahead by £70.
Your time needs to be reserved for those tasks that only you can do. If there are some tasks you enjoy doing, by all means, have at ’em! Continue doing them - but spend your time and your money wisely.
Take your business to the next level
If you’re looking to hit bigger goals, reach higher financial targets and look to make a bigger impact, you can’t do that alone. There simply aren’t enough available working hours in your day to do it all. The smart business owner knows, if you want to get to the next level, you’re going to need a team.
And for those business owners, it isn’t a case of asking why hire a virtual assistant? It’s more of a question as to why not hire a virtual assistant! Not only is a Virtual Assistant a valuable part of a team, but they’re also often the person who has the widest range of useable skills to bring to your business - skills that will certainly help you take your business to the next level.
Plus, wouldn’t you want to get your hands on the experience and contacts that comes with 20+ years as a Personal Assistant at boardroom level?
